About Us

About us

Eborienteers (Ebor) takes its name from the Roman name for York – Eboracum. It is the Orienteering Club for the eastern half of North Yorkshire and includes York, Malton, Ryedale, Scarborough, Selby and South Hambleton.

This includes the flat plain of the Vale of York and the high plateau of the North York Moors incised with steep valleys. The moors have several large areas of commercial forest, as well as large areas of heather/bracken moorland.

The flatter areas in the Vale of York provide good opportunities for an introduction to orienteering. The more varied areas in the moors provide much greater physical and technical challenges to progress on to.

The club organises a wide range of events throughout the year, in different parts of its area, catering for all abilities. Events range from highly competitive regional events through to local events and informal training, beginners and schools exercises. The highlight of the year is the White Rose Weekend held on the North York Moors over the August Bank-Holiday weekend. This is one of the longest running events in the British orienteering calendar.

You do not have to be a Club member to take part in Club events. Provision is made at all events for beginners and the best way to find out more about Orienteering is to come to one of our events and head to the enquiries tent.

In addition the club has organised the creation of a number of Permanent Orienteering Courses which provide the ideal opportunity for newcomers to the sport to have a go at orienteering at a time of their choosing and without any time pressure.

The main emphasis of the club has been on providing plenty of events for its members to develop and enjoy their orienteering skills, rather than on creating or attracting star performers. However the club has consistently nurtured and developed the talents of its junior members and two of them are now members of the British national squad – Matt Speake (now at INT) – Senior Men and Jenny Whitehead (now at SYO) – Senior Women

Eborienteers is affiliated to the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association and British Orienteering
