Location: - Rowntree Park, York, YO23 1JQ
Fixture Date: - 04/06/2023
Location
Assembly location will be in Rowntree Park, YO23, 1JQ. Rowntree Park is a leafy public park with features such as playgrounds, picnic areas, tennis courts & a sizeable lake. Dogs are allowed in the park.
Please don’t approach the park from the South to avoid passing through main competition area and avoid other runners. Preferred entry route is via Terry Avenue, which runs next to the river on the east side of the park, with pedestrian access via the small car park. Alternative entry points to the west of the park are off Bishopthorpe Road via Vine Street and Anne Street to access the NW gate, or Richardson Street to access the west gate. These are visible if you maximise the location map.
Assembly, Start and Finish is in the northern, city side of the park. You can leave clothing bags at Assembly at your own risk and we will provide a tent for this purpose.
Public toilets are available in the park.
Please note that Rowntree Park is a popular area, so please respect other park users. There will be plenty warm up space at the north end of the park or up Terry Avenue.
Parking
Use any of the York Park and Ride schemes and they will drop you off in the City Centre. Rowntree Park is a 2km walk from York Railway station, 1km from Ouse bridge. The P+R buses stop at these locations.
Alternatively, please park in local public carparks: St George’s Field car park (Tower St, York YO10 4AB), Nunnery Lane car park (Nunnery Ln, York YO23 1AA) and Castle Car Park (Tower St, York YO1 9SA) are the closest car parks to the start area. Please do not use the small car park in the park itself along Terry Avenue.
Costs (£2+ per hour) will apply in the public car parks (please note that much of York is resident permit parking only on the streets, particularly around Rowntree Park).
Terrain
Urban areas consisting of residential streets and alleyways with sections of parkland. Longer courses will extend into the city centre which is mostly pedestrianised (from 10:30) with some busy roads and all adult courses will enter a school grounds that we also have permission to use.
As a fast paced urban event and a 1:4000 map, some controls are in close proximity to other controls and competitors should make sure that they check their control codes.
Junior courses will be entirely within the Park and adjacent woodlands, with no roads to cross.
Courses 1+2 – South Bank urban streets and City Centre South
Courses 3+4 – South Bank urban streets
Course 5 – Rowntree Park and parkland/woodland across Millenium Bridge
Course 6 – Rowntree Park and grass parkland South of the park.
Please also note:
– The courses go near the river and the lake in the park, so juniors should be careful not to go too close. If parents are worried they should shadow juniors. There are no controls that should require juniors to approach the river bank
– Adult courses have been planned to make sure that competitors get a short run through the historic centre of York. York city centre is likely to be busy and will be more busy for later runners than early ones. To try and mitigate this we have brought forward start times 30 mins, but please be courteous as you go through the city centre.
– As with all urban events there are road crossings, some of which will be busy. Please cross carefully and safely.
