Planners notes added 24/12.
The main forest road and bigger tracks run west-east. Smaller paths link them running north-south. Most competitors will cross the entry road at some stage. Where smaller paths cross the forest road the parking will leave entrances/exits clear. Drivers and competitors, please be aware of this and take care.
NEITHER THE WHITE NOR THE YELLOW COURSE CROSSES THE PARKING ROUTE.
You may have seen that Google terrain maps show areas of cleared forest running N-S between the major tracks. These have been replanted and the wide/narrow green veg stripes should not be ignored! However, some of the areas have a roughish path along the veg change on one of the longer sides.
The BLUE course has back-to-back maps printed with appropriate CD alongside. The loose descriptions have the whole course (20cm long).
Please ‘dib’ if you do not get visual/sound confirmation at the SI box. It is possible that we will not have woken them all.
Allerthorpe Woods are South of the A1079 near Pocklington. The road is signposted “Sutton upon Derwent 4” and is opposite the Jet petrol station. Follow the orienteering signs from SE753479 (what3words: resonated.shops.awakes)
Parking will be on forest roads. The access is narrow with little room for vehicles to pass. Please arrive before 1130 and do not leave until after 1230.
There is no space for motorhomes on the forest track. You may be able to use the FE car park opposite the entrance gate. There is a charge and the start is 900m walk.
Please consider car sharing.
TAKE CARE: competitors will be crossing the access road on their courses. Where smaller paths cross the forest road the parking will leave entrances/exits clear. Drivers and competitors, please be aware of this and take care.
Allerthorpe Woods have a patchwork of tree types and ages from tall pines to compact plantations and birches. Owned by Forest Enterprise, it is a flat lowland wood where the vegetation grows well on richer soil. Ground vegetation includes brambles (avoided) and bracken (almost dead). In addition to the main tracks, it is criss-crossed by a network of woodland paths which are narrow but distinct and well used by regular (dog) walkers.
