With thanks to English Heritage for allowing Assembly, Start and Finish on the lawn on the west side of the Castle entrance, Castlegate, YO18 7AX. Assembly is 5-10 minute walk from the various parking options. Why not try the Coastliner 840 to relieve the pressure on parking, and this will drop you in the middle of Pickering.
Otherwise please avail yourself of the several parking options in Pickering. Eastgate and Vivis Lane have long stay. There is short stay option in the Ropery. There are other options also available.
The castle parking is not available (unless you intend to actually visit the castle, English Heritage, admission fee applies).
Please note that there is a Food Fair near Pickering that day. The road from Malton could be busier than normal and possibly queues to the Fair location at the NY500 cafe 2 miles south of Pickering on the A169.
* Start and Finish will be on the lawn outside the entrance to the castle.
* The longer course is largely in the streets of Pickering (avoiding the main high street) with some elements in the wilder parts of town and a foray in to Newbridge Park and round the castle.
* The shorter course is largely within the wilder parts of Pickering, including quarry area and all of Newbridge Park and avoids the town. There will be some tarmac running to cross the occasional road. Shoes with decent grip are recommended, especially if there has been recent rain.
* The junior course is entirely in Newbridge Park and castle area.
* Please note that due to the nature of Newbridge Park the junior course will be a bit more more technical than usual. Parents may wish to shadow. There will also be a club member in the area to assist should that be necessary.
* Newbridge Park has an extensive path and cycle track network that will form the basis of most route choices. The cycle tracks don’t appear to have been used recently, and local information suggests they are used very little.
* Newbridge park has a number of high crags that are marked on the map. The planning avoids the need to cross these crags, but caution is advised as courses will necessarily run parallel to the crags, exploiting the extensive path network.
*Courses will require to cross the NYMR railway crossing. If you are passing at 1100 ish you may get caught by the crossing closing. If the crossing closes when you arrive, let me know and I will flag in the results. It is not intended to have a timeout leg for an event of this size.
Starts from 10-00 to 11-30. Courses close 12-30. The slightly earlier start is to try and avoid worst of the food fair traffic, people and vehicular.
Part of our agreement with English Heritage is that we do not use stakes that will penetrate the ground of this archaeological site. Consequently we won’t be able to pitch a tent to provide any sort of bag drop. However, the area we have is pretty secluded so if the weather is clement – and it promises to be – then bags can be left adjacent to the start.
On that note, the forecast is for a hot day, so please think about bringing appropriate hydration and sun cream.
Please comply with Covid procedures for distancing and sanitisation as requested. Please obey instructions of Start marshals.
Electronic chip hire £1 Senior & 50p Junior (note SIAC dibbers will not be available to hire)

Download will be managed in a socially distant manner. If you have any queries or issues about your run subsequent to downloading, please notify download marshal who will either fix any computing problem or contact an event official if necessary on your behalf.
