Northern Night Championships and YHOA Night League, 2nd March 2024

Super new trophy for Champion man and champion woman!

After a hiatus since the last running in 2019, the Northern Night Championship returns! It will be run from the Swallow Hall Golf Club, near Wheldrake, south of York. The courses will include parts of the golf course and Wheldrake Woods which lie adjacent to the course.

Final details have been updated including bar menu and below some planner’s notes that you need to be aware of.

NOTES FROM THE PLANNER:

The golf course has been added to Wheldrake Woods map. Note that the there is lying water in some areas of the woods, and the drainage ditches are full and can be wide and deep. Cross with care and there are alternative routes if you do not wish to cross them.

There is a power line across the golf course which is not marked on the map.

All putting greens are out of bounds and marked with the OOB cross hatch.

Most fairways are lined by young trees with some conifers mixed in, where conifers have branches at ground level they are represented on the map as illustrated below:

This is a line of trees with fairway either side, and the conifer in the picture below is shown by the green circle.
Two or more of these close together will be marked as a thicket.  Other thickets are rhododendron, holly, and leylandii hedges.

Bunkers are marked as broken ground.

A 10ft deep ditch, runs north/south on the golf course, it has shallow water in and is crossable but there are also four bridges available.

There are other areas marked as out of bounds.  These are machinery sheds and the owner’s property, please respect this and do not cross.

We are using the facilities at the golf course, Toilets, Lounge, Bar, Kitchen. Please leave muddy gear outside.

Assembly, Download and Enquiries are in the Club House which will be open from 1630.

Food and drink will be available in the Club House. Food will be available 1700-2030. The bar will be open serving hot and cold drinks.

There are two championship courses (see below). If you wish to compete in the northern night championship select the course relevant to your age group. There are also two non competitive courses for those who want to have a run out without the pressure of the championship. You are also able to compete if you wish to ‘run up’ on the longer course. Equally, you can run down on a championship course, but you wont be competitive for the championship

Decide which course you wish to enter and select your class for the course and start time via Racesignup. Late entry fees will apply from 25th Feb. Map availability will be limited after this date.

Presentation as close to 2030hrs as possible. Prizes for Age Group 1st, 2nd, 3rd. We have a new trophy for the quickest Woman and Man. To qualify you must be a member of a Northern Club and run the LONG course. See photo of one of the trophies above. The clubhouse will be warm and cosy with food and drink available so it would great if you could stay for the presentation.

First aider and kits will be in Assembly.

Terrain

The golf course is a parkland style with trees, ponds and some deep ditches. The woods are a mix of conifers and deciduous with an extensive path network. The golf course has been added to Wheldrake Woods map.

Starts

Start is 50m from the club house and is between 1815 – 1915 depending on daylight.
Finish is at the club house.
Please enter by Sunday 25th in order to guarantee a map. Thereafter entry will be dependent on map availability.

Please comply with Covid procedures for distancing and sanitisation as requested. Please obey instructions of Start marshals.

Download will be managed in a socially distant manner. If you have any queries or issues about your run subsequent to downloading, please notify download marshal who will either fix any computing problem or contact an event official if necessary on your behalf.

Safety

Although a thorough risk assessment has been conducted by the organiser, orienteering is an adventure sport and you are taking part at your own risk.

Results

Results will be posted on the Eborienteers website as well as here, once the event has occurred.  Please allow 24 hours.
