This is an opportunity to run in a different area of York using a new map compiled by Peter and Christine Roberts. The event will be based near to West Bank Park – its rare to have an area of York we’ve not visited before, so this is not to be missed!
Details updated 31/03/2025.
Location: - YO24 4ES
Fixture Date: - 27/04/2025
Location
Assembly will be at Acomb Primary School, West Bank, York, YO24 4ES (GR SE582512; W3W issue.tooth.discrepancy). West Bank narrows to one lane near the junction with Acomb Road: please take care.
Parking
There is parking on hard-standing at the school for about 60 cars. If the weather has been fine we may also be able to use a grassed area. Otherwise later arrivals must park on Acomb Road. To avoid nuisance to the neighbours and to ensure that we can use the school in future DO NOT PARK ON WEST BANK, FIRTREE CLOSE OR PARKSIDE CLOSE.
On account of the single lane section of West Bank, no exit before 12.30.
Terrain
Notwithstanding its bijou appearance, West Bank Park has challenges even for experienced orienteers. Speed in the urban areas will depend on careful route choice and noticing the many alleys and cut-throughs. There is also one of the few areas of higher ground in York; the views would be excellent “if it wasn’t for the houses in between”. Some adult courses will visit a very small wood and some other areas of off-road running, and all will visit West Bank Park. In the interests of fair competition, please do not walk through West Bank Park on the way to the event. The Junior courses cross two very quiet roads. There will be a marshal on each crossing. Please tell juniors that they can only cross the roads under instruction from the marshal and must stay on pavements at all other times.
