We are glad to be welcoming everyone back this year. The event has been planned at quite short notice due to Covid restrictions and getting permissions. Anyway, we are here and hope you have a great weekend!
Campsite Fri 27 Aug to Mon 30 Aug 2021
The campsite will be open from Friday 4pm until Monday 12 noon.
If campers want to stay the extra night (Sunday) they can book through S Corrigan (corrigan-s@sky.com).
Location: Escrick Park Estates, Escrick, York, YO19 6EA. The entrance to the estates office and campsite will be signed from the A19 south of Escrick. The entrance is on the opposite side of the A19 from the turn signed Stillingfleet.
Terrain: The campsite is normally used as a wedding venue. It is also part of a horse trekking course with jumps. There is a deep water jump so please keep clear. The riders have been told we are camping here and should avoid us. The grass field has been mown recently and there are some undulations but you can pretty much pick your spot. All the land adjacent to the camping is private, a school and farmland. Please respect this and stay within the confines of the camping field.
Facilities: Toilets and water only. The mobile phone signal is good. We will not be providing a group barbeque but barbeques are allowed. The landowner has asked that if we do use barbeques to please be careful not to scorch the grass.
White Rose Quiz will be available from Friday at the Info tent.
There will be no chemical waste area and please do not empty your toilets into the Portaloos.
Escrick, Wheldrake, Ricall, and Deighton villages all have pubs and there is a Thai restaurant in Escrick.
Entries: Pre entry system closed on Sunday 22 Aug. There is now the option to camp on Sunday 29 Aug booked and paid directly to S Corrigan (corrigan-s@sky.com). We have to be clear of the campsite by 1200 on Monday 30 Aug.
Quiz
The quiz will be open from Friday 4pm until Sunday 12 noon.
Location: Available at the campsite or download/enquiries each day.
Entries: £2 per copy. All proceeds will go to York Against Cancer, a local charity supporting people during their treatment and afterwards.
Results and Quiz answers: Will be posted on the Eborienteers website, www.eborienteers.org.uk.

Safety: Although a thorough risk assessment has been conducted by the organiser, orienteering is an adventure sport and you are taking part at your own risk.
COVID-19. We will plan for whatever restrictions are in place at the time of the event.
This wood is private but there are holiday cabins in some areas. Please observe the out of bounds areas and socially distance from any members of the public.
Yorkshire & Humberside Orienteering Association Orienteering Championships Skipwith Common Sat 28 Aug 2021
Location: Skipwith Common is one of the last remaining areas of lowland heath in the north of the England, managed by Escrick Park Estates and administered by Natural England. The site is roughly 50% lowland heath and 50% woodland.
Parking: The car park will be signed from the A19 along King Rudding Lane. Please approach from the A19. Nearest Post Code is YO19 6QL. OS Grid Ref is SE 643 374. Park as instructed by the officials. Car Parking fee included in the entry fee.
Terrain: This is classed as an ancient landscape with 270 hectares of open heath, ponds, reed-bed, woodland, and scrub. It is reasonably flat and in some areas a bit vague, requiring good navigation skills.
Planners Comments: The area is basically split into 2 sections. The remains of the old WW2 airfield form the basis for one section which is mostly wooded and has several man-made features which are a reminder of the areas former use.
The other section is the heath which is a mixture of open heath/scrub with numerous pockets of woodland and many marshes and ponds. The largest ponds and marshes are marked as uncrossable on the map and these should be avoided and the largest ponds are marked as OOB. Many of the marshes are now very dry due to recent weather but there are visible signs of their location due to the change in undergrowth. There are some pockets of undergrowth within both sections and at this time of year this will be high although the majority of the areas are runnable.
The roads in the area are used by locals so there may be isolated traffic but they should be going fairly slow as the roads are not car friendly. There is livestock on Skipwith Common but from what I have seen they are more curious than anything else.
Fences/OOB – there are two fenced enclosures and these are marked by a purple line and should only be crossed at marked crossing features or gaps, other fences are not marked with this purple line however using crossing features is preferable. The biggest ponds are covered by the OOB markings along with the log piles near the public car park.

York City Race Sun 29 Aug 2021
Location: The York City race will be based on the south side of the city. There is a designated car park hired for the event. Car Park details are below. If you are walking to the event Assembly will be in the car park. From the A64 the best way in is the A1036 Junction, follow the brown signs for Racecourse, past Askham Bar Park and Ride and take the road to Bishopthorpe (Sim Balk Lane). This will take you over the A64 where you will take the first left onto Church Lane. At the T junction turn left towards York on Bishopthorpe Road. This goes back over the A64 and will lead you to the car park.
Parking: York Racecourse. The car park is a designated car park for orienteers and there will be no charge on entry. It is adjacent to Bishopthorpe Road in York OS Grid Ref SE600495, post code YO23 1DE. Please park in rows to allow easy access.
Directions: Driving to the event
Cycling to the event: From the campsite it is a very nice cycle ride to the event. The cycle route takes you all the way to the event car park. From the campsite you will have to cross the A19 and follow the Stillingfleet Road for approximately 800m. Here you can get onto the Sustrans ‘Trans Pennine Trail Cycle Route’ which is a tarmac route all the way to the event, follow the signs to the York City Centre. En route there is a lovely café, next to the river at Naburn. Also keep your eyes peeled for the scaled down version of the Solar System. Just for interest, this was the old East Coast Main Line railway route before it was diverted past Selby.
Facilities:
The toilets for the event are adjacent to the car park, a brick building to the west end.
There are no toilets near the Start or Finish.
Map: Waterproof paper 1:4,000, A3 size, by Paul and Catherine Taylor. Updated 2021 by Steve Whitehead and Helene Lecomte.
Terrain & Planner’s Notes: Note uncrossable features all shown below: blue river (very cold and dangerous – use the bridges!); olive green private land; purple criss-cross also out of bounds (mostly flood defence work); thick black lines for fences and walls; buildings.
Also note use of new symbol for “passable at two levels” (striped white and pale brown showing that you can run over the bridge or under it, though the latter would be a dead end in this case!)
Safety notes:
Young Junior course G – no road crossings but see note about cyclists below.
Junior Course F – one road crossing soon after the start. This is a temporary road for access to a hotel and caravan site. It has a speed limit of 10/20mph and traffic calming measures and warnings to drivers as it is the way to a large park. Course F has controls either side of this road with a 1-minute time out to allow children to cross without rushing. Parents/carers must explain this to them.
All other courses have road crossings and the longer courses cross busy roads. Take care! There are optional crossing points on the map where there are crossing aids of various types.
Under 16s are not allowed unaccompanied on these courses.
All competitors need to watch out for the many other users of the area, both pedestrians and cyclists. All courses cross cycle paths. The area is very popular and well-used on Sundays.
Please be very careful going round blind corners – run wide!
All courses cross a shared foot/cycle bridge – there is no rule as to which side pedestrians/cyclists should use so keep looking over your shoulder if you are weaving from side to side.
There are sure to be some dog walkers about too.
Courses: (electronic punching – SIAC Enabled, don’t forget to punch the start and finish).
